Our Story

After 15 years, John's Grill has been infused with a new passion. John and Lisa Alden have retired to spend more time with family and travel the world. They hand picked the new owner, Chris Shirley, after meeting with him, as well as a few other prospective buyers. Chris, like John, worked for Daniel’s Broiler and has a similar culinary background. Once John and Lisa decided that he was the right person, Chris and John worked together for months to make sure that the transition would be as seamless as possible and that Chris would have a great understanding of the culture that exists at Johns. While we are excited to bring our loyal guests some new and exciting food, wine, beer, and cocktail options, we also want to continue the traditions that John and Lisa built, as well as make sure those crowd favorites stick around. Don't worry, We have the crab cake recipe!

Chris is also the owner and Executive Chef of Trails End Taphouse & Restaurant in Snohomish, Washington, just a 30 minute drive from John's Grill. We are excited to partner with Trails End to continue building a strong team and increase our offering to our wonderful guests. We look forward to meeting those of you we haven't yet had the opportunity to, and making so many new friends.

The original history of  John's Grill began with John Alden working in restaurants in Marin County, California as a teenager. Following high school, John went on to earn his Hotel Restaurant Management degree and worked in many fine dining establishments in downtown San Francisco.

In the summer of 1989, John and his wife, Lisa, moved to Mukilteo to start a family. John was hired as Executive Sous Chef and opened Daniel's Broiler in Bellevue. John completed his tenure with Schwartz Brothers Restaurants at Daniel's Broiler, Leschi before leaving to do outside sales in the service industry.

After twelve years in sales, Alden knew it was time to fulfill his long time dream and open his own restaurant where he could share his love and passion for food with the Mukilteo and Everett Communities. As a 23-year resident of Mukilteo, John knew his hometown needed an upscale, classic steak and seafood restaurant.

On Labor Day 2005, John and Lisa, opened John's Grill on the corner of Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue in Mukilteo's Old Town. New York Steak heads the dinner menu with Cajun-spiced grilled prawns in a lemon beurre blanc sauce not too far below. But the menu doesn't stop there. It also offers pan-roasted garlic chicken and pork tenderloin medallion sauteed in vermouth, elephant garlic, capers and artichoke hearts a few selections down. John makes all his own stocks and salad dressings from scratch which, combined with his natural talent for cooking, makes his food so flavorful and satisfying.
